Back to basics: Whole Foods for Healthy Dogs by Dr. Susan Lauten and Joseph Lascola is an excellent resource for dog owners who would like to cook nutritonally balanced meals for their dogs. As a veterinarian I have received many requests from clients for home-cooked maintenance and specialty diet recipes. Most of the diets found on the internet are not correctly balanced in vitamins, minerals, fats, proteins, and carbohydrates and cannot be fed for any period of time. Dr. Lauten has insured that each diet is correctly balanced, and provides dog owners with easy to use recipes and useful feeding guidelines. Nutritionally balanced healthy treat recipies are also included, as well as several good basic rules to follow when feeding dogs. Resources for purchasing some of the ingredients are also included. This is an excellent resource for dog owners and for veterinarians. Can’t wait for the rest of the volumes to be published. Dr. C

`Back to Basics: Whole Foods for Healthy Dogs’ is the 1st volume in a veterinary nutrition series by Susan Lauten, PhD and Joe Lascola. This is a must have for anyone who is interested in preparing healthy, balanced meals for their dogs. As a veterinarian, I know that clients receive a lot of conflicting information about canine diets. There is even disagreement among veterinarians! What could be healthier for our pets then preparing the highest quality foods in the safety of your own home? No worries about recalls, no guesswork about quality of ingredients. While many people would like to cook for their animal companion, they simply do not know how to create a nutritionally balanced meal. This book gives them the information they need. This is a collection of delicious, easy to prepare, nutritionally balanced meals for dogs. Each recipe includes the nutritional information for meals as prepared, and on a dry matter basis. Dr. Lauten offers common sense guidelines on feeding, and recognizes that preparing an exclusively home cooked diet is not realistic for everyone. She offers suggestions on how to incorporate these meals into your dog’s diet, in a way that fits anyone’s lifestyle. This is a down to earth approach to home cooking. I will definitely recommend this book to my clients.
