  • Question by annie23: How do you keep a small dog form leaveing your yard with out a fence?
i have a 7mth. old yorkie pug “ruby” she is a fire ball and just all of a sudden started running to our neightbors house this scares me because they have a pool and she dose not know how to swim and she runs away when i call i cant put up a fence because i live on alot of ground ! please give me training tips!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Answer by snowy
Living on a lot of ground does not preclude a fence. In fact it would make it even more reasonable to have a fence so you can keep the dog nearby where you can keep an eye on her. If you don’t want a visible fence, they make invisible fences with collars that keep the dog in. However, some dogs learn to run really fast so they don’t have to feel the effects of the collar for long. If you refuse any sort of fence, your only option is a leash, especially with an independent breed like a pug.

  • Question by cheap_thrylls: How can I get my third cat to be more sociable?
I have a huge “pet” family. A golden retriever, a terrier/sheltie mix and now three cats. This question pertains to my newest cat, it came into the house basically only a couple of months old and weaned. It took a little time but the three cats can now be in the same room although the kitten is very aggressive with my older cats. I expect the distance with the dogs, but the kitten is very anti-social with the “people” family (me, wife and kids). I’ve always had luck just letting them find their place and observe interaction with the other pets, but this kitten refuses to be held or rarely seen. This has been for months now so any “new home” psychosis should be in the past. We can only get close to the kitten at feeding time. We’ve tried picking her up at feeding time, and softly petting her. As soon as released, she is off like a shot though. Any suggestions what to do so she will become part of the family and not be a lone wolf?

What i did to get my cat who was like that to come around was I would go fine where she was was hiding and sit next to her there and talk to her and tell her it was ok. Over time she finally came around.

(Saving Seafood) – Warning that within our lifetimes, the worlds supply of fish could collapse entirely, the startup news website OZY last week promulgated claims about the depletion of ocean fish based on 7-10 year old studies that were controversial at the time of their publication, and have been largely disproven by multiple scientific authorities in the ensuing years. (Plenty of Fish in the Sea? by Melissa Pandika, 12/12)

One of OZY’s allegations was that even pet goldfish would disappear.

The article begins with the statement “Whether its tuna sashimi or lobster bisque, we love our seafood so much so that the ocean cant keep up.” But in fact, after an independent, third-party assessment, Maine lobster was declared a “sustainable and well-managed fishery” at the International Boston Seafood Show by the internationally-recognized Marine Stewardship Council on March 13 of this year.

This OZY story is the latest to cite the claim that the population of bluefin tuna has dropped almost 90 percent since the 1960s in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Southern Oceans. This claim originated in a study, published in 2003 by Drs. Ransom A. Myers and Boris Worm, of Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Canada (Nature, vol. 423, 15 May 2003, pp. 280-283), which reached its conclusions using data on bluefin tuna taken only from longline fisheries. In a paper published over fifty years ago (Pacific Science,Vol. XVI, January 1962) Vernon Brock of the U.S. Bureau of Commercial Fisheries noted that “Longline gear, as used for tuna fishing, characteristically takes the larger tuna.” Since longline gear selectively targets larger bluefin, fish caught using longlines are not a representative sample of the species as a whole.

The studys conclusion that the tuna population has declined by 90 percent has been challenged by Dr. Maria Jos

  • Question by sammyd: How do I train my dog to stop biting people?
I adopted a foster dog from the shelter. He is a rescue dog from a house of 25 other dogs and my home was his first experience being a “pet”.

He is a very loving dog, and a perfect pet to my family. However, when people come to the house he freaks out. We will calm him down, but he will follow the guests around and snap at them when he can. I can’t figure out what his problem is or what to do about it. The other day he snipped at a two year old girl, who was not threatening him at all.

He is two years old and a mid sized dog, a little bigger than a cocker spaniel.

    Please help!
    thanks!

Snap him on the nose with a rolled up newspaper when he does it. Negative response teaches them.
